Lungs
About 90% of people who get lung
cancer are smokers. Lung cancer is one of the most common cancers in men and is becoming increasingly common in women. Smoking
directly causes 75% of deaths from bronchitis and emphysema.
Heart
Smoking is the major cause of 25% of deaths from heart disease.
Smoking increases your heart rate and increases your requirement for oxygen. Your risk of heart attack and angina occurring
prematurely is generally increased if you smoke cigarettes.
Skin
Many smokers find their skin becomes dry and in some smokers
discoloration around the fingers is common.
Blood
Smoking causes chemicals to be
absorbed into the blood stream which is then circulated to every organ in the body. Smoking can cause diseases of the circulatory
system which can cause gangrene and amputation.
Nails & Teeth
Discoloration of nails and teeth is common in
smokers.
Reproductive Organs
A pregnant woman who smokes has an increased
risk of miscarriage, of having a stillborn or of having a low birth weight baby. Reductions of 2-8ozs in average birth weight
have been reported in babies of non-smokers.
Nose & Throat
Smokers cannot breath freely and hence sense
of smell is diminished. Smokers are more likely to get cancer of the throat or larynx.
Brain
Cigarette smokers have a greater
risk of developing troke?than non-smokers. Your brain requires an adequate blood supply to maintain its function and efficiency,
interference with this blood supply may lead to a variety of symptoms which may terminate as stroke.
